Employee differences can create strain in workplace relationships and productivity. Agile leadership means being quick to spot the difference, recognizing what is needed to close the gap, and taking decisive, strategic action. It means finding a way to work together so that collectively, you succeed as a team. In that very process, each of your employees gains valuable skills and insights and transforms into a successful leader. The ability to do the above starts with your mindset. Great leadership is understanding that your role requires much more responsibility. Not only are you required to be in a management position, but you are also now responsible for your employees’ development and success. Focus on their leadership skills. Is your team full of strategic thinkers? Or born leaders? They may have some soft skills, but a large part of your job will be developing leadership skills for them so that they are future-ready.

To develop them, first, you’ll need to engage them. How can you use delegation as a means to learn industry-specific skills and to create ownership if you have no idea what is meaningful for them? For personal growth to happen, you need to create space for them to understand themselves. This will help them realize their leadership potential sooner.

d. Allow your team members to lean into their own leadership styles

When you’re giving them ownership and engaging them, you can shape them to have strong leadership skills that are different from yours. Allow them to take ownership in their professional development. One pitfall of leadership is to expect other leaders to be like you. In a disrupted way, there is no longer just one way to lead effectively. Diversity in your leadership teams is a strength, so harness that.

6. Make Conflicts Constructive: Harnessing the Benefits of Differences

Conflict is inevitable in the workplace. Great leadership means not avoiding conflict. Successful leaders are proactive in developing these conflict strategies and leadership skills in their professional (and personal) life.

Here are some effective leadership skills when it comes to turning conflict into constructive debates:

  • Proactive conversations and regular employee check-ins.

Don’t be afraid to mediate conflict between your team members either. Role modeling is an important leadership skill. As you mediate conflict, you are also showing your team how they can create a positive environment while having healthy disagreements.

7. Communicate with Impact: Learning to Have Effective Human-to-Human Conversations

All leadership roles require effective communication. One of the most important leadership skills, effective communication includes everything we mentioned in handling conflict and more.

Communication, however, is not a one-way street. Observe and notice what is happening in others as you interact with them. When you build self-reflection into your day-to-day routine, you will discover many opportunities for you to improve your communication skills rapidly. This means identifying areas where you can optimize so that your team works more efficiently. The amount of time spent on removing roadblocks or dealing with conflict should be reduced be minimal. Being a strategist also means thinking more out of the box, maintaining the adventurous spirit, and discovering new ways to maximize your collective impact while not having to work harder. Fully leverage the talent in your team and create better ways of working.
